Israeli Police End Unregulated Compensation Deals with Left-Wing Protesters

For years, the Israeli Police paid hundreds of thousands of shekels in settlements to left-wing protesters who filed civil lawsuits alleging wrongful arrests and other police misconduct during demonstrations. Until recently, each regional legal advisor had independent authority to approve and sign settlement agreements without centralized oversight, leading to inconsistent policies and compensation amounts across districts. Notably, the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv districts reportedly approved unusually high settlements.

Following a report by Channel 14 News, Eran Nahon, the Police Legal Advisor, implemented a new policy requiring all civil claims against the police to be reviewed centrally at the national legal advisory level. This change aims to standardize procedures, enhance supervision of settlements, and safeguard public funds by eliminating disparities between districts.

The police emphasized the importance of uniform handling of legal proceedings related to similar events and confirmed that all such cases will now be examined with a comprehensive national perspective. This reform marks a significant shift in how the Israeli Police manage compensation claims stemming from protest-related incidents.
