New Study Suggests Weight-Loss Drug Semaglutide May Slow Biological Aging
A recent study published in Nature Communications indicates that semaglutide, the active ingredient in weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, may slow biological aging processes beyond its known effect on weight reduction. The research involved 108 adults living with HIV, a group prone to accelerated biological aging and chronic inflammation, who were treated with weekly semaglutide injections for 32 weeks. Using 17 advanced epigenetic clocks to measure biological aging, researchers found that semaglutide slowed the aging rate by approximately 9% compared to placebo, with improvements also noted in cardiovascular, immune, liver, kidney, brain, and metabolic health markers.
Dr. Osnat Raziel, director of Maccabi Longevity and an obesity treatment expert, explained that semaglutide's benefits likely extend beyond weight loss by reducing chronic inflammation and visceral fat, improving insulin sensitivity, and lowering metabolic stress. These effects may contribute to the observed deceleration in biological aging. However, the study's authors and experts caution that these findings are preliminary, based on a relatively small and specific population, and do not yet prove that semaglutide extends lifespan or should be used as an anti-aging treatment.
The choice to study people with HIV was strategic, as their condition allows for clearer observation of biological aging changes over a shorter period. Despite the promising results, larger and longer-term studies across diverse populations are needed to confirm whether semaglutide can truly impact longevity and age-related diseases. For now, researchers emphasize that semaglutide should be used only for approved medical indications under physician supervision, and not as an anti-aging therapy.
This study adds to growing evidence that GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide may have broader health benefits, potentially positioning them as important tools in longevity medicine aimed at improving healthy lifespan, not just treating obesity and diabetes.
