Israeli Government Requests Emergency Knesset Session During Recess to Pass Security and Economic Laws

On Sunday, Israeli Government Secretary Yossi Fox formally requested Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana to convene the Knesset plenum during its summer recess. The unusual move aims to advance eight urgent legislative proposals, most nearing final approval. A key focus is extending emergency regulations enacted during the recent "Sword of Iron" military operation, including restrictions on security detainees' meetings with lawyers and extended detention periods for security suspects.

Additional security-related bills include amendments to the Prisons Ordinance and regulations ensuring legal representation for minors and individuals with disabilities during interrogations. Beyond security, the government seeks to finalize legislation promoting capital market activity and approve provisions from the 2026 economic plan concerning municipal ordinances.

The plenum is also expected to hold a first reading on amendments to the IDF's permanent service law addressing pensions. This request follows Section 9(b) of the Knesset Law, allowing the plenum to convene during recess for urgent legislative needs. The move reflects ongoing security challenges requiring exceptional legal frameworks, even during the parliamentary summer break, which typically suspends plenary sessions in favor of committee work and oversight.
