Rothman Says Splitting Attorney General Role Could Change the Game
Knesset Constitution Committee chair MK Simcha Rothman said on Friday that the committee’s work on a bill to split the attorney general’s role could be transformative. In an interview with Galey Israel radio, he described the proposal as a “game-changer.”
Rothman said that if the law is passed now, it would take effect on January 1, 2027. He said that by then Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara would finish her term as attorney general.
According to Rothman, Baharav-Miara would remain in office under a transition arrangement only until she completes her responsibilities in criminal prosecution. After that, he said, Israel would have an attorney general who would work for the government of Israel.
Rothman also warned that if a left-wing government is in power, Baharav-Miara would remain in the post, or someone “much worse” would be appointed.
