Albanian Chief Rabbi and Israeli MK Meet Pro-Israel Muslim Leader to Discuss New Bektashi State

The Chief Rabbi of Albania, Rabbi Yoel Kaplan, along with Israeli Member of Knesset Michael Malchieli and his advisor Attorney Akiva Hofi, met with Baba Mondi, a prominent Muslim leader of the Bektashi order known for his strong support of Israel. Baba Mondi, who holds significant influence over millions of Bektashi followers worldwide and the Albanian population, expressed pride in standing alongside Israel and the Jewish people, especially during difficult times. Rabbi Kaplan maintains one of his closest interfaith relationships with Baba Mondi.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the establishment of the sovereign state of Bektashia, a planned city-state within Tirana, Albania, which serves as the global headquarters of the Bektashi order. This new state, if realized, would be the smallest independent country in the world by area, approximately 0.11 square kilometers, smaller than Vatican City. The initiative, supported by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Baba Mondi, aims to grant citizenship exclusively to Bektashi clergy and government officials, following the Vatican model.

MK Malchieli, who previously served as Israel's Minister of Religious Services, thanked Baba Mondi for his steadfast support of Israel during challenging periods and pledged to assist in advancing the necessary backing for the Bektashia state project. The meeting highlighted the unique interfaith cooperation and the shared historical experiences of persecution and resilience between the Jewish people and the Bektashi community.
