Portland Trail Blazers' Moves Risk Undermining Anfernee Simons' Role Amid New Additions
Anfernee Simons emerged as a breakout star last NBA season, becoming an All-Star and a player around whom Portland Trail Blazers could build a playoff team. Despite his rise, the upcoming season is expected to see Simons lose his central offensive role due to the arrival of Ja Morant and the return of Damian Lillard. The Rip City Project blog highlighted that Portland is not maximizing Simons' abilities, mainly because of the crowded guard positions on the roster.
Blogger Reese Kuntz explained that Simons' development aligned well with the Blazers' roster last season, which gave him a leading role amid numerous injuries. This increased responsibility saw Simons handle the ball more and manage the offense from the forward position. However, this also led to a high turnover rate, contributing to Portland finishing the season with the most turnovers per game in the NBA. The team accepted these growing pains to allow Simons to develop his best game.
Looking ahead, the dynamic will change significantly with Morant's addition. Morant thrives with the ball in his hands and is not known for creating effective spacing for Simons, who led the NBA last season in drives to the basket per game. While Portland needed backcourt reinforcement and another playmaker to ease Simons' burden, this move may actually diminish his status. The Blazers now have several star players, including Morant, Simons, Lillard, and Jrue Holiday, which will present a complex challenge for new head coach Mike Norrie in managing roles and egos.
Kuntz noted that the playoff series against San Antonio demonstrated Simons is not yet capable of being the primary offensive option on a championship-contending team, so this dilemma was inevitable. However, Morant's arrival does not resolve it, as the new backcourt additions may not be better than Simons. This situation risks blurring the offensive hierarchy and potentially limiting the team's ceiling.
No official responses from the team or players have been reported yet regarding these developments.
