US Issues High Alert for Citizens in Iraq Following Iranian Attacks After Iraqi PM's US Visit
The United States Embassy in Baghdad has issued a high-level security warning to American citizens residing in Iraq, urging them to maintain maximum vigilance amid escalating tensions. This advisory comes shortly after Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's historic visit to Washington, where he sought to mend relations with the US and aimed to have Iraq removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. Despite these diplomatic efforts, the embassy's warning signals ongoing instability.
The embassy cautioned that the Iraqi airspace might be closed unexpectedly due to recent Iranian attacks on the Kurdish region in northern Iraq, specifically targeting Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Travelers were advised to verify flight statuses with airlines before arriving at airports in Erbil, Baghdad, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah. The embassy reiterated its Level 4 travel advisory, urging all Americans to avoid travel to Iraq because of terrorism, kidnappings, armed conflict, internal unrest, and limited US government emergency assistance capabilities.
Although mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for some embassy staff, the US diplomatic mission continues its operations in Iraq. The Kurdish region, while largely autonomous with its own government, language, airports, and border crossings, remains officially part of Iraq, meaning attacks there impact the broader country. The warning underscores the fragile security situation in Iraq amid Iranian militia activities and ongoing regional tensions.
