Israeli Knesset Approves Import Reform to Ease US Product Entry and Boost Competition
The Israeli Knesset approved a new import reform known as "What’s Good for the US is Good for Israel," aimed at reducing regulatory barriers and expanding consumer product options by allowing goods meeting American standards to enter Israel through a streamlined process. The legislation was passed overnight between Thursday and Friday and complements a similar reform for European standards enacted about 18 months ago.
Economy Minister Nir Barkat leads the initiative, which is expected to lower import costs, encourage new importers, and increase market competition, potentially resulting in price reductions and a wider product selection. However, the actual price drops will depend on market competition and whether importers and retailers pass savings on to consumers.
The reform enables the production, import, and marketing of a broad range of US-made products that comply with federal American regulations without requiring unique Israeli certification. Implementation will be gradual, with the new import pathway opening in early 2027 for categories including baby and children’s products, toys, bottles, tableware, cribs, strollers, bicycles, cleaning agents, and detergents.
Data from the Ministry of Economy shows that previous import reforms have already cut bureaucratic burdens by over 80%, with more than 80% of imports and 90% of importers in regulated sectors using the new channels. Since the European reform, the number of importers has grown significantly in categories such as vacuum cleaners (35%), coffee machines (26%), toys (20%), and baby strollers (15%). Price reductions have been recorded for electrical appliances, including dishwashers (up to 45%), dryers (34%), washing machines (24%), and vacuum cleaners (10%).
The ministry anticipates that the US reform will continue these trends by broadening the range of American products available, reducing import barriers, attracting new market players, and strengthening competition. It is also expected to deepen trade relations and expand business activities between Israel and the United States.
