Houthi Group Intensifies Crackdown in Yemen After Iranian Plane Incident

Following an attempted landing of an Iranian plane in Yemen earlier this week, the Houthi movement has escalated its military and political measures, causing widespread fear among residents in Houthi-controlled areas. The incident, which took place at Sanaa International Airport, has led the Houthis to launch a large-scale arrest campaign and impose unprecedented security measures in the cities of Sanaa and Al Hudaydah. The group claims it is targeting espionage and terrorist cells.

Residents expressed concern over the Houthis' escalating actions, which included full house arrests and neighborhood sieges. Witnesses told the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat that several neighborhoods near Tunis Street in the Al-Thawra district of Sanaa were under lockdown and heightened alert for nearly two days. Houthi security forces deployed numerous masked operatives and armored vehicles at neighborhood entrances, raided homes, and detained dozens of unidentified individuals.

The Houthis restricted movement within these areas, detaining and interrogating anyone approaching or attempting to enter. Detainees were held in vehicles and only released after commanders' approval, with no contact allowed with family members. Sources revealed that those released were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements forbidding them from discussing the interrogations or posting about the events on social media, under threat of punitive measures.

These actions are believed to stem from the Houthis' fear of a military response from the Yemeni army, following their escalation supported by the Iranian regime. The unauthorized landing of the Iranian plane at Sanaa airport is seen as a violation of Yemeni sovereignty and has intensified tensions in the region.
