President Herzog Seeks Legal Alternatives to Halt Draft Evader Arrests Amid Haredi Protests

About a month ago, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, through his team, approached Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara to explore legal alternatives to arresting draft evaders. Herzog's initiative aims to reduce societal tensions stemming from the contentious issue of Haredi military conscription. His team also considered imposing economic sanctions on draft evaders as a non-arrest measure to ease the conflict within Israeli society.

Despite Herzog's efforts, Baharav-Miara did not respond directly to his request, stating that any such proposal would require government approval. Given the low likelihood of government agreement, Herzog did not pursue this path further. This outreach occurred amid ongoing violent protests by extremist factions within the Haredi community against conscription and the arrests of draft evaders.

Two major protests took place on the same day as Herzog's disclosed efforts. One was a peaceful demonstration by members of the Sanz Hasidic sect outside a military prison, protesting the detention of two yeshiva students who were arrested for 20 days after seeking medical exemptions at the recruitment office. The other was a violent protest at the Geha and Jabotinsky intersection on Highway 4, where extremist Haredi protesters blocked traffic and clashed with drivers.

Herzog's attempt reflects the broader societal struggle over the integration of the Haredi community into national service and the state's response to draft evasion, highlighting the challenge of balancing legal enforcement with social cohesion.
