Environment Minister Reclassifies Crocodiles to Allow Transfer to Detention Facility
Environment Minister Idit Silman has redefined crocodiles as "managed wild animals" following opposition from the Nature and Parks Authority. This reclassification enables the transfer of crocodiles to a detention facility in Katzia. The move relates to a controversial proposal by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, first reported in December, to establish a security prison surrounded by crocodiles. Ben-Gvir introduced the idea during a situation assessment meeting with Israel Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yakobi. Shortly after, Israel Prison Service representatives conducted a professional tour at Hamat Gader to examine reptile care and acquisition. The cost of a young crocodile was estimated at approximately $8,000, while an adult crocodile could cost up to $20,000. Despite the unusual nature of the proposal and some ridicule from senior prison officials, the Israel Prison Service has begun exploring the establishment of such a prison. One suggested location for this facility is the Hamat Gader spa site south of the Sea of Galilee.
