World Cup 2026 Finally Kicks Off With Mexico vs. South Africa
The 2026 World Cup is finally here, and it opens with a match between host nation Mexico and South Africa, a repeat of the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, only with the hosts reversed. Mexico will try to secure a win in front of the home crowd, while South Africa is seeking its first victory since the World Cup it hosted.
The historic Azteca Stadium is hosting the match and is becoming the first stadium to host opening matches of three different World Cups. Ahead of kickoff, an impressive opening ceremony will be held featuring Shakira, who will break the record with her fourth appearance at four different World Cups, more World Cup appearances than Italy has made over that same span.
Given the South American atmosphere that suits the region and the occasion, J Balvin will also perform, alongside the local bands Maná and Alejandro Fernández, while Burna Boy and Tyla will provide the African touch. The performances are expected to last about 17 minutes, so it is best not to blink.
