Sean Carrington, a 36-year-old England football fan from Wigan, got a large tattoo of the World Cup trophy on his calf with the inscription "England World Cup Winner 2026" after England's victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 32. The tattoo, about 30 cm long and costing £550, was meant to celebrate what he believed would be England's eventual triumph. However, after England's 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina on July 12, 2026, Carrington revealed plans to add the phrase "Only joking" beneath the tattoo.

Carrington watched the semi-final in a Manchester viewing area and described the defeat as "simply depressing," though he does not regret the tattoo. He also abandoned a more extreme idea to tattoo the famous England fan slogan "It's Coming Home" on his chest after studio staff advised against it. Carrington, a gardener with eight other tattoos mostly of family members, was surprised by the viral attention his tattoo received on social media.

The tattoo studio manager, Jamie Taylor, said they tried to dissuade him, warning the tattoo was permanent, but Carrington was determined.
