Israeli Startup Develops AI Drone That Autonomously Hunts Mosquitoes to Combat Disease
An Israeli startup named Tornyol has created a groundbreaking micro drone weighing just 40 grams that can autonomously detect and eliminate mosquitoes mid-flight. Unlike conventional drones that rely on cameras, this drone uses ultrasonic sonar sensors similar to car parking sensors, along with tiny microphones and advanced software to analyze wingbeat frequencies. This technology enables the drone to specifically identify mosquitoes, differentiate them from beneficial insects, and potentially distinguish between mosquito species and genders.
Mosquitoes are considered the deadliest animals globally due to their role in spreading diseases such as malaria, Zika, and dengue, as well as causing widespread nuisance with their bites. Tornyol plans to deploy fleets of these autonomous drones from small docking stations in public gardens and residential neighborhoods. The drones will patrol designated areas, detect mosquito buzzing, neutralize the insects in flight, and return independently for recharging.
The company estimates that around ten drones could protect an entire square kilometer at a significantly lower cost than current pest control methods. This innovation could mark the beginning of the end for mosquito bites and the diseases they transmit, offering a chemical-free alternative to traditional insecticides and sprays.
