Gadi Eizenkot Sparks Controversy Comparing Youssef Haddad to Mansour Abbas Over Arab Identity
Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yisrael party, ignited a political controversy after stating in a Channel 13 interview that he does not rule out a coalition partnership with Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra'am party. Eizenkot compared this possibility to the Likud party endorsing Youssef Haddad as a Knesset member, saying that Netanyahu’s approach is to divide by excluding 21% of Israeli citizens who are Arab.
In response, Youssef Haddad, an Israeli Arab advocacy activist, sharply criticized Eizenkot’s comparison. Haddad emphasized that aside from their shared Arab identity, he and Mansour Abbas have nothing in common. He highlighted his own work founding an Arab-Israeli organization promoting partnership and state advocacy, contrasting it with Abbas’s party ties to an aid group allegedly funding terrorist organizations including Hamas. Haddad rejected any attempt to equate or legitimize Abbas through association with him.
Haddad also expressed strong opposition to the current Arab parties in the Knesset, calling for their boycott not because they are Arab but due to their anti-Israel stance. He clarified that boycotting these parties is not racism, but equating him with Abbas solely based on their ethnicity is. Regarding his own political future, Haddad said he is still considering entering politics but has not made a decision.
This exchange highlights ongoing tensions within Israeli Arab political representation and the broader debate over coalition partnerships involving Arab parties.
