Atletico Madrid Leads Player Representation in 2026 World Cup Final for Third Consecutive Time

Atletico Madrid will have the most players represented in the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, with nine players across both squads. Four players from Atletico Madrid are on Spain's roster: Marcos Llorente, Marc Poveda, Alex Baena, and Alex Grimaldo. Five players represent Argentina: Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina, Julián Álvarez, Thiago Almada, and Giuliano Simeone. This marks the third consecutive World Cup final where Atletico Madrid has had the highest number of players involved. In 2018, the club had four players in the final between France and Croatia, and in 2022, four players participated in the final between Argentina and France. This year, the number has more than doubled to a record nine players.

In 2018, Atletico players included Šime Vrsaljko for Croatia and Antoine Griezmann, Lucas Hernández, and Thomas Lemar for France, with the French trio winning the title after a 4-2 victory. This means Atletico Madrid is guaranteed to have at least four new World Cup champions regardless of the final's outcome. If Spain wins, Llorente, Poveda, Baena, and Grimaldo will lift the trophy. If Argentina retains the title, Musso, Molina, Álvarez, Almada, and Giuliano Simeone will become champions. Giuliano Simeone's participation is particularly notable as he is the son of Atletico Madrid's coach Diego Simeone and could return to Madrid as a World Cup winner with his father's national team.
