OpenAI Employees Fund Group Advocating Stricter AI Regulation Against Founder’s PAC
A group of OpenAI employees has donated a total of $215,000 to Guardrails Alliance, a super PAC established last month that campaigns for tougher regulatory limits on advanced AI companies and models. Guardrails Alliance, which launched with an initial $5 million in donations, describes itself as a grassroots super PAC supported by tech workers, labor unions, and other groups. It aims to counterbalance Leading the Future, a rival super PAC promoting AI industry interests, which has raised $100 million, including a $50 million contribution from OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman and his wife Anna.
According to Wired, seven current OpenAI employees and one former employee contributed to Guardrails Alliance. Among the largest donors is Juan Felipe Seron Uribe, an OpenAI researcher since 2022, who gave $200,000. He stated that after four years working on strategies to mitigate AI’s societal harm, he fears his research will be wasted without mechanisms holding private companies accountable for AI development. He criticized tech billionaires like Brockman for backing Leading the Future to block AI regulation and welcomed Guardrails Alliance as an important counterforce.
Guardrails Alliance aims to raise a total of $15 million. Co-founder Shauna Thomas told Wired she is unconcerned about the funding gap with Leading the Future, emphasizing that their strategy is not to match dollar-for-dollar but to leverage public opinion against AI industry lobbying. She said exposing the actions of AI-promoting groups leads to public rejection, making their approach more cost-effective.
This internal division highlights growing tensions within the AI community over how to regulate the technology’s rapid development and societal impact, with employees pushing for accountability measures that contrast with the founder’s regulatory stance.
