Yinon Magal Calls Yeshiva Students Detention Law Just but Predicts Supreme Court Rejection
Yinon Magal, speaking on Channel 14's program The Patriots, addressed the Supreme Court's decision to issue a conditional injunction against the law permitting detention of yeshiva students who avoid military service. Magal asserted that the law is fundamentally just because it targets only those not actively studying in yeshivas and subject to military orders, rather than detaining actual yeshiva students. Despite his support, he predicted the law would be struck down by the Supreme Court.
Magal emphasized that those not engaged in yeshiva study should be drafted into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He urged the IDF to handle conscription wisely and without conflict, especially during the month of Elul, a time of mercy and forgiveness, suggesting that many willing to serve avoid enlistment due to fear of arrest. He called for recruitment efforts to proceed without confrontations or detentions.
Concluding his remarks, Magal questioned the true intentions behind the push for detaining yeshiva students, asking whether the goal is genuine recruitment or political strife aimed at toppling the government or dividing the ultra-Orthodox community. His comments received applause from the studio audience.
