Degel HaTorah Agrees to Support Government Legal Adviser Powers Split Law After Funding Concession

A severe coalition crisis erupted when Degel HaTorah threatened to oppose the bill splitting the powers of the Government Legal Adviser. The Religious Zionist Party sharply criticized Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni, accusing him of protecting the current legal adviser Gali Baharav-Miara and enabling her to continue in office without the coalition's desired changes.

Minutes before the vote, Gafni's faction threatened to vote against the bill unless the government advanced funding for Haredi kindergarten teachers. Degel HaTorah conditioned their support on this budgetary issue, despite opposition from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

Following intense negotiations, the coalition agreed to keep the salary supplement for Haredi kindergarten teachers on the government's agenda, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expected to raise the matter in cabinet discussions. After this concession, Degel HaTorah members announced they would support the bill, resolving the coalition crisis.

The Religious Zionist Party had warned that opposing the bill would allow the Government Legal Adviser to maintain her judicial authority unchecked, harming the right-wing bloc. Degel HaTorah was cautioned not to threaten the coalition or risk losing credibility within the Haredi community.
