Israeli Coalition Members Reject Supreme Court Injunction Suspending Haredi Draft Freeze
Members of the Israeli coalition government strongly criticized the Supreme Court's decision to issue a temporary injunction against the emergency regulation freezing the detention of draft-dodging Haredi men. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi stated that the injunction has no legal authority to override or suspend a law, declaring that "there is no legal authoritative source for such an action" and that "it is forbidden to obey lawbreakers." Knesset member Yaakov Asher accused the court of seeking chaos and anarchy that could lead to civil war, asserting that the court has already taken sides in this conflict. Deputy Minister Israel Eichler added that the Supreme Court judges have proven they do not read the laws properly nor recognize the public and their elected representatives. The coalition's comments reflect deep tensions between the government and the judiciary over the enforcement of military conscription laws affecting the ultra-Orthodox community.
