Experts Warn Cheap Charging Cables Can Severely Damage Smartphones
Many users assume any USB-C charging cable works equally well for their devices, especially since Apple’s switch to USB-C. However, repair experts caution that using low-quality charging accessories can cause serious damage to advanced iPhones like the iPhone 15 and 16. Increasingly, these devices arrive at repair labs completely unresponsive, with no external damage, only to reveal internal motherboard component failures caused by substandard charging equipment.
Jessa Jones, founder of the American repair lab iPad Rehab Microsoldering, highlights the growing trend of consumers opting for cheaper cables to save money. She explains that this small saving can lead to costly repairs because cheap cables often lack essential control systems that regulate power supply and prevent dangerous conditions such as overheating or voltage spikes. Without proper communication between charger and phone, inappropriate voltage can damage sensitive internal components, sometimes irreversibly.
Experts also warn that poor-quality charging heads pose risks. Transformers not built to standards may fail to handle load and heat changes properly, potentially harming the device’s electrical parts. To reduce risk, users should choose certified products from reputable manufacturers, avoid selecting solely on price, and consider chargers with advanced technologies like gallium nitride (GaN) for better efficiency and heat management.
The advice is clear: treat charging cables as critical components rather than trivial accessories. Investing in quality cables and chargers can prevent expensive repairs, data loss, and frustration, protecting the longevity of expensive modern smartphones.
