Hanoch Daum Criticizes Shas Leader Aryeh Deri for Smiling During Military Draft Vote
Israeli media personality and author Hanoch Daum sharply criticized Aryeh Deri, chairman of the Shas party, following the Knesset vote on the military draft law. Daum took issue with a photograph showing Deri smiling in the Knesset chamber during the vote. In a post published on Tuesday, Daum explained that over the past three years he has regularly met with soldiers, war wounded, widows, and bereaved families amid ongoing conflict. He described Deri's smiling expression during the vote as deeply painful and disconnected from the suffering he witnesses daily.
Addressing Deri directly, Daum said, "I cannot explain to you, Aryeh Deri, how much that smile hurts us, captured just now in the plenum while you voted in favor of draft dodgers, some of whom are your own grandchildren. How painful it is. How disconnected. And what a terrible desecration of God it is." Daum's remarks highlight the emotional toll of the ongoing war on Israeli society and the sensitivity surrounding the draft law debate, especially regarding exemptions and deferments.
The incident underscores tensions within Israeli politics over military service obligations and the perceived insensitivity of some political leaders to the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families. The draft law vote remains a contentious issue, reflecting broader societal divisions.
