Satmar Hasidim Threaten Mass Protest Over Arrests of Draft-Dodging Yeshiva Students
The Satmar Hasidic community in Israel is preparing for a large-scale protest following the arrest of two of its members, a yeshiva student and a scholar, who were detained after arriving at a military enlistment office to regularize their status but were identified as draft dodgers. The arrests took place inside the enlistment office, where the two sought exemption from military service but were immediately taken into custody by the military police. One of the detainees is notably the grandson of the late Rabbi Eliyahu Shmuel Shmerler, former head of the Satmar yeshiva.
The community has warned that if mediation efforts with military authorities fail, a mass demonstration will be held outside the military prison "Prison 10" near Netanya, where the Satmar global center is located. The arrests come amid ongoing military police operations targeting draft evasion among ultra-Orthodox men, a highly sensitive issue in Israeli society.
Tensions were also evident in southern Israel, where an attempted arrest of a young Hasidic man by military police in Sderot sparked a rapid and vocal protest by local residents. The crowd gathered quickly, surrounding the officers and demanding the release of the detainee, who was ultimately freed to avoid further unrest. This incident underscores the heightened sensitivity and potential for public disorder linked to enforcement of draft laws against the ultra-Orthodox community.
