Yinon Magal Criticizes IDF Chief Eyal Zamir Over Leak of Draft Law Letter

During a broadcast on Channel 14's program The Patriots, host Yinon Magal sharply criticized the leak of a letter from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir concerning the draft law for freezing the detention of yeshiva students. The letter was leaked earlier that day to Nir Dvori of Channel 12. Magal questioned the timing and motives behind the leak, asking Zamir directly, "Eyal Zamir, are you cooperating with alarmist channels?"

Magal addressed two main points from Zamir's letter. First, Zamir's general opposition to canceling the detentions. Magal noted that during committee discussions, the army representative, Shay Tayeb, was asked if there was a single example of a yeshiva student who was detained and then enlisted, and none was provided. Magal emphasized that those who are not yeshiva students should be drafted and urged Zamir to enforce this.

Second, Magal focused on Zamir's concern about who decides who qualifies as a yeshiva student, which constituted much of the letter. Magal countered that the army has handled this issue for years, as required by the committee's legal advisor. He also claimed that this key issue was not discussed at all during the committee meetings and that committee members were unaware of it.

Magal concluded by expressing discomfort over the leak's timing, especially since it occurred after the committee's discussions and objections had ended. He questioned Zamir's intentions, calling the leak "very strange."
