Knesset Votes on Basic Law for Torah Study Ahead of Final Approval
The Knesset is currently debating and voting on the Basic Law: Torah Study, a key legislative initiative championed by the ultra-Orthodox parties. This vote is part of agreements reached between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox factions ahead of the Knesset's dissolution. If passed, the law will be enacted into the legal code as early as tonight.
According to the coalition agreements, the government will advance both the Basic Law: Torah Study and the Absentee Law. In return, legislation to change the status of the Attorney General and the Communications Law will also be promoted. The ultra-Orthodox parties insisted that the laws directly affecting them be prioritized at the top of the legislative agenda.
