Armed Man Arrested Attempting to Breach US Capitol Security Perimeter
An armed man was detained Monday evening after driving his vehicle toward the northern security checkpoint of the US Capitol complex in Washington, D.C. The incident triggered an immediate lockdown of large sections near the Capitol building and prompted a swift response by security forces. Authorities launched an official investigation to determine the suspect's motives and the circumstances behind his deliberate approach to the checkpoint.
The US Capitol Police confirmed the arrest and reiterated that firearms are strictly prohibited on Capitol grounds. Investigators are working to gather more information about the individual and why he attempted to enter the secured area. At the scene, officers removed personal items and water bottles from the suspect's Ford Bronco, which was parked diagonally near the checkpoint.
Emergency responders also attended to a dog found inside the vehicle, safely removing it and transferring it to an animal welfare organization. As of Monday afternoon, the northern checkpoint remained closed while the investigation continued. Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity or any charges.
This event adds to a series of security incidents at sensitive government sites in Washington, highlighting the heightened vigilance around the Capitol. Over the years, the Capitol complex has faced multiple security breaches and threats, leading to reinforced protective measures and frequent lockdowns to safeguard lawmakers and staff.
