Trump Administration Launches Aggressive Campaign to Undermine International Criminal Court's Influence

The Trump administration has initiated a comprehensive effort to isolate the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, aiming to protect U.S. sovereignty from what it views as an existential threat. The U.S. government, which has never joined the Rome Statute establishing the ICC, accuses the court of attempting to act as an unchecked global arbiter with the power to prosecute and detain American citizens arbitrarily.

The State Department is reportedly considering a wide range of measures against the ICC, including sanctions targeting judges and officials, visa cancellations, and aviation restrictions. Additionally, the U.S. plans to exert diplomatic pressure on other countries to sever ties with the ICC and withdraw from the institution.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. will not allow foreign officials to infringe on its inherent independence. He warned that the administration will respond firmly if the ICC or its allies threaten American sovereignty, stating, "We will teach the ICC the full meaning of American resolve."

This move marks a significant escalation in the longstanding dispute between Washington and the ICC, with the U.S. consistently rejecting the court's jurisdiction over its nationals and viewing its attempts to prosecute American military and civilian personnel as a severe breach of national sovereignty.
