Likud Constitution Committee Moves Meeting to King David Hotel Amid Primary Preparations
The Likud Constitution Committee has changed the location of its scheduled meeting to 3:00 PM today at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, instead of the Knesset. This follows repeated delays and venue changes, including a last-minute cancellation yesterday due to a security discussion. Originally, the meeting was set for 8:00 PM Sunday at the Prime Minister's Office but was postponed after some committee members had already arrived.
The committee, chaired by Likud Central Committee head Minister Haim Katz, held a preliminary session last Thursday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During that meeting, several temporary proposals were presented regarding changes to the party's primary election system, district allocations, and the mechanism for reserved spots on the Likud Knesset list. These proposals were discussed initially and are expected to be voted on in today's session.
These developments come amid accelerated preparations for the Likud primaries. Last month, the Constitution Committee confirmed that the primaries would proceed despite internal debates about altering the candidate selection method. Ongoing negotiations between Netanyahu and Katz aim to finalize an agreed framework covering the number of reserved slots, district structures, and the list formation process. Key issues include the extent of reserved spots for the prime minister and possible adjustments to district boundaries and internal voting methods.
Decisions are anticipated in the Constitution Committee meeting on Sunday, after which the proposals will be submitted for approval by the party's governing bodies as required by Likud's constitution.
