Vinod Khosla Leads $9.6 Billion Purchase of Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks, the NFL team that won this year's Super Bowl, has been sold to the Khosla family, led by Vinod Khosla, founder of Sun Microsystems, for a record $9.6 billion. The team confirmed the sale on social media, noting it was carried out according to the wishes of the late owner Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. The Khosla family will now hold controlling ownership of the franchise.
Vinod Khosla expressed honor in taking responsibility for the Seahawks and pledged to build on the winning legacy established by Allen, aiming to earn the trust of the organization and fans. Paul Allen purchased the team in 1997 for $194 million and kept it in Seattle until his death from cancer in 2018. Ownership then passed to his sister, Jody Allen. In February, the estate began the sale process shortly after the Seahawks secured their second Super Bowl title.
In a related transaction, the Portland Trail Blazers NBA team, also owned by the Allen estate, was sold in September to a group led by Carolina Hurricanes and Tom Dundon. Vinod Khosla, 71, also founded Khosla Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm that was the first investor in OpenAI with a $50 million investment in 2019. Forbes estimates his net worth at $13.7 billion. Khosla emphasized the importance of taking risks to achieve extraordinary results.
As part of the purchase agreement, the Khosla family must relinquish their minority stake in the rival San Francisco 49ers. Khosla had acquired a 3.1% stake in the 49ers last year, becoming a minority investor before leading the Seahawks acquisition.
