Jordan Pickford Identified as England’s Weakest Link Ahead of World Cup Semifinal
The four top-ranked FIFA teams have all reached the 2026 World Cup semifinals. On Tuesday, European champion Spain (ranked 2) will face France (3) in Dallas, followed by the world champion Argentina (1) playing England (4) in Atlanta on Wednesday. Former German and Bayern Munich star Stefan Effenberg highlighted a key difference among these teams, focusing on the goalkeepers. Effenberg criticized England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the weakest among the semifinalists, contrasting him with other top keepers like Unai Simón and Emiliano Martínez. He pointed to Pickford’s lack of height and ability to stop certain shots, referencing a goal conceded against Norway in the quarterfinals, although he acknowledged the goal was difficult to save.
Pickford, 32, has been England’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2018, earning 90 international caps and participating in five major tournaments, including three World Cups and two European Championships. He recently broke Peter Shilton’s record for most World Cup appearances by an English goalkeeper, with 18 matches. In the current tournament, Pickford has conceded six goals in six games and kept two clean sheets. At the club level, he has played for Everton since 2017, after a transfer from Sunderland for nearly 30 million euros. Despite his experience, Pickford has yet to win a major title with either Everton or the England national team.
