Trump Praises Mysterious Freedom Fuel Network Offering Discounted Gasoline in US
Amid renewed tensions with Iran and rising oil prices, a new chain of gas stations called Freedom Fuel is rapidly expanding in the United States, with 20 locations in Pennsylvania and five in New Jersey offering discounted fuel prices. Since the start of the year, the average US gasoline price has surged 76%, straining household budgets. President Donald Trump, concerned about inflation's impact on the upcoming midterm elections, has publicly praised the initiative on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Little is known about Freedom Fuel or its operators. According to a White House official, the network is a private company with no government involvement or federal funding. The company was incorporated in Delaware on June 23. Attempts by The Hill to contact the network's operators have been unsuccessful. Despite the White House distancing itself from the venture, Trump urged other companies to follow Freedom Fuel's example and lower prices.
Freedom Fuel's first station opened in Philadelphia, offering gas at $3.47 per gallon, a price notably below the average $4.00 in Pennsylvania and $3.92 in New Jersey as of last Friday, according to AAA data. However, prices at these stations have recently risen to about $3.57 per gallon, with the White House noting that prices fluctuate with market conditions. Costco also sells gas at similar discounted prices near some Freedom Fuel locations, benefiting from its nationwide scale and bulk purchasing.
Industry experts warn that prices as low as $3.47 per gallon are unsustainable, with Gulf Oil analyst Tom Kloza stating that a realistic minimum price is around $3.60 per gallon, as selling below cost is not a viable long-term business model. Freedom Fuel currently represents a very small fraction of the US fuel market, which includes approximately 123,000 convenience stores selling gasoline nationwide.
Trump's support for Freedom Fuel comes amid historically high fuel prices, despite some easing due to US-Iran negotiations. The average gas price was $3.87 per gallon last Friday, down from a peak of $4.50 during recent conflicts but still significantly above the pre-crisis average of about $3.00. Trump recently warned retailers on social media to lower prices or face "big trouble."
