MK Boaz Bismuth Criticizes Legal Counsel for Undermining Haredi Draft Policy Debate

Boaz Bismuth, chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, sharply criticized the committee's legal counsel following a vote on freezing the detention of yeshiva students. Bismuth accused the legal opinions presented to the committee of ignoring the positions of professional and military bodies, including the IDF and government officials involved in the Haredi recruitment issue. He expressed frustration that the legal advisors often contradict the views of these key stakeholders and seem to prioritize legal arguments over practical and professional considerations.

Bismuth emphasized that those directly engaged in recruiting Haredim to the IDF have informed the committee that arrests are ineffective and counterproductive, harming recruitment efforts by producing the opposite outcome desired. He also accused the legal counsel of acting as an extension of the Attorney General's office, choosing to escalate tensions rather than calm them and deepen societal divides instead of bridging them.

Concluding his remarks, Bismuth stressed the importance of considering the social and security realities alongside legal opinions. He stated the committee's responsibility is to "extinguish the fire in the streets, reduce societal rifts, and advance the vision of Haredi enlistment in the IDF."
