Likud Committee Debates Netanyahu's Reserved Seats Ahead of Primaries Amid Security Concerns

The Likud party's Constitution Committee is set to convene Sunday evening at 8:00 PM to decide on the party's candidate list formation for the upcoming Knesset elections. However, the meeting's occurrence depends on the security situation, particularly developments expected around Lebanon from 6:30 PM onward. Committee members will consider two options: establishing a steering committee to set the list or holding primaries alongside reserved slots for party leader Benjamin Netanyahu. The latter is seen as more realistic and preferred.

The main dispute centers on the number of reserved slots for Netanyahu, with proposals ranging from eight to eleven. Even the lower figure is unprecedentedly high compared to previous Netanyahu terms. Some party insiders criticize the move, saying eight reserved slots up to the 40th place is already excessive, roughly two reserved spots per four candidates. If the eight reserved slots extend to the 30th place, it would significantly alter the list composition. Netanyahu is believed to have strategically initiated negotiations demanding eleven reserved slots, making eight seem like a compromise.

Critics also argue that changing the list concedes to opponents' claims that the current Likud list is flawed, rather than defending its achievements. Likud MK Tali Gottlieb tweeted that primaries will proceed, emphasizing the party's democratic nature and respect for loyal voters. She confirmed Netanyahu will have reserved slots while other candidates compete in primaries.

Supporters of primaries, especially among the top ten Likud members, argue that a democratic process will unify the party ahead of elections. They warn that a steering committee deciding the list could lead to internal conflicts and damage the party's image. Primaries are also seen as beneficial for campaign momentum, activating branches and supporters. Party leaders stress the importance of maintaining primaries to counter accusations that Netanyahu is authoritarian and to preserve Likud's democratic credentials.
