Residents Protest New School Building Allocation in Modiin Illit Over Traffic and Safety Concerns

Residents of the Gan Hadassim neighborhood in Modiin Illit are protesting the municipality's plan to allocate a newly constructed educational building in the heart of their community to students from outside the area. Meanwhile, local girls continue to attend distant schools, requiring daily bus commutes. The neighborhood, home to between 1,200 and 2,000 families, faces increasing traffic congestion, and residents warn that the new school's use by non-local students will exacerbate traffic and safety issues.

Rachel D., a mother of three, described the daily commute for her daughters as a "nerve-wracking nightmare," highlighting the dangers of crossing busy roads and intersections. She expressed frustration that despite promises of a family-friendly neighborhood, basic child safety is being overlooked. Yossi K., a neighborhood resident and action committee member, added that the area is already struggling with narrow streets, full parking, and morning traffic jams. He criticized the decision to bring in buses and shuttles for outside students, calling it disconnected from the community's needs.

In response, dozens of residents have signed a protest letter demanding the municipality and planning authorities reassign the new school building to serve local children. The residents intend to submit this appeal soon. The Modiin Illit municipality has yet to respond to the controversy.

This dispute highlights tensions between urban planning decisions and community safety and convenience in rapidly growing ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.
