MK Tzvi Sukkot Faces Violent Attempt to Block Entry to Rahat During Education Oversight Visit
On Sunday, dozens of residents in Rahat physically tried to block MK Tzvi Sukkot, chairman of the Knesset Education Committee, from entering the city during an official inspection visit to local educational institutions. Despite the aggressive attempts to prevent his entry, Sukkot was escorted into Rahat by reinforced police and Knesset guard forces and proceeded with his scheduled visit, emphasizing that he would not yield to threats or violence.
The visit, intended to assess the local education system and address crime challenges, quickly escalated into a confrontation with the gathered residents. Sukkot condemned the violent obstruction, stating, "I will not agree that Israel becomes a place where a Knesset member or committee chair cannot enter a city to perform their duties. Attempts at intimidation and violence will not deter me."
He further argued that the efforts to block his visit underscore the importance of his oversight, highlighting the need for intervention in education as a foundation for broader social improvements. Sukkot noted the surrounding communities are often enclosed by fences and that local business owners in the south face extortion threats, reinforcing the urgency for systematic solutions.
This visit is part of a series of in-depth tours by the Education Committee in southern communities aimed at challenging the status quo in supervising educational institutions in high-crime areas. Sukkot declared a policy shift, affirming that the committee will continue to visit all parts of Israel, Jewish or Arab, without fear.
Previously, Sukkot conducted a heavily guarded visit to a school in the northern Jerusalem village of Kafr Aqab, which receives millions in funding from the Israeli Ministry of Education but reportedly teaches Palestinian Authority materials inciting against Israel and encouraging terrorism. His ongoing campaign targets funding for schools promoting incitement and opposes cooperation with the Israeli state, aiming to strengthen governance in Arab sector education to curb violence and prevent education that fosters crime and terror.
The Rahat visit concluded without physical injuries, though tensions remain high in the area.
