Israeli Police Chief Denies Responsibility as Ultra-Orthodox Community Faces Violent Arrests
The recent violent and mistaken arrest of an ultra-Orthodox man in Ashdod highlights ongoing tensions between the Israeli police and the ultra-Orthodox community, stemming from what critics call failed policies under Police Commissioner Dany Levi. Despite Levi's claims that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) delegated the task of arresting draft evaders to the police, the police remain the frontline enforcers, deepening social divides.
Two weeks ago, Levi reportedly criticized police spokespeople over various issues, including the handling of ultra-Orthodox draft evader arrests. He lamented that while he once enjoyed positive interactions in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods like Bnei Brak, he can no longer enter such areas. Levi also stated that the IDF "dumped" the responsibility for these arrests on the police and then withdrew from involvement.
This situation raises questions about why the police continue to lead these operations if the IDF has stepped back. The police, established to protect all citizens, have repeatedly clashed violently with ultra-Orthodox protesters, causing public outrage and eroding trust. The recent incident involved a man being violently detained on camera, only to be later cleared of suspicion, followed by a brief police apology.
Critics argue that the problem lies not with individual officers but with leadership and policy. They call on Levi to halt the arrests immediately until clear responsibility for enforcement is defined, suggesting that if the IDF is responsible for conscription, it should also enforce related laws. Restoring public trust requires ending the perception that police actions disproportionately harm one community.
Levi faces a critical choice: to lead the police impartially for all Israeli citizens or to continue under external pressures that alienate the ultra-Orthodox community. Until this changes, both the ultra-Orthodox public and police officers bear the consequences. Levi is urged to reconsider his approach, especially in light of recent events and the community's refusal to engage in dialogue.
