Rolling Stones Release Excellent New Album Foreign Tongues After Decades
The Rolling Stones have released their 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues, marking a notable return to form for the legendary rock band. Recorded primarily by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and a distinguished lineup of guest artists, the album features 14 tracks created mainly for themselves rather than their longtime audience. Despite their advanced ages, Jagger turning 83 this month and Wood at 79, the band members remain passionate about making music, with Jagger recently hinting at a possible tour in 2027.
Foreign Tongues includes standout songs like "Rough and Twisted" and "In the Stars," which showcase Richards' infectious guitar riffs and could easily fit into future live performances. The album also features contributions from notable musicians such as Paul McCartney, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Winwood, Bruno Mars, and Robert Smith of The Cure. The late Charlie Watts' drumming is present on some tracks, adding a poignant touch.
Produced by Andrew Watt, who also worked on their previous album Hackney Diamonds, Foreign Tongues balances classic Rolling Stones blues-rock elements with subtle modern touches. The album avoids pushing boundaries but instead offers a refreshed take on their familiar sound, including blues solos, soulful vocals, and rich keyboard arrangements. Covers of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and Chuck Berry's "Beautiful Delilah" close the album, symbolizing the band's deep roots and enduring legacy.
Critics note that Foreign Tongues is the band's best and most enjoyable album since 1989's Steel Wheels, demonstrating their continued vitality and enjoyment in music-making. The album reflects a band comfortable in their identity, revisiting and renovating their classic style rather than chasing trends. After 64 years together, the Rolling Stones continue to defy expectations, delivering a compelling and authentic record in 2026.
