Israeli Lawmaker and Lawyer Clash Over Haredi Military Draft and Future of the State
A heated debate unfolded on the Israeli program "Black Kippahs" regarding the military draft law, arrests of draft evaders, and the Basic Law on Torah Study. Likud MK Osher Shkali launched a sharp attack against the judiciary and opposition, accusing the Attorney General of political manipulation aimed at creating chaos to topple the government. He claimed the left opposes drafting Haredim and accused MK Shirly Naor of "lying and misleading" the public.
Attorney Hadad added that the Israeli military is not genuinely interested in drafting Haredim and fails to keep its promises, advocating instead for a professional army. Journalist Yehuda Izikowitz presented demographic data showing that in the past three years, most Jewish first graders have come from religious and Haredi sectors, meaning that within a decade, Haredim will constitute the majority of draft-eligible youth. Izikowitz warned that the military must adapt to this demographic shift.
MK Shirly Naor (Yesh Atid) responded angrily, calling the claims delusional and denying that Haredim were eager to enlist before the arrests began. He warned that the state described by the other panelists faces no future, predicting no army, no livelihood, and eventual dissolution within 20 years. Naor concluded with a stark reminder of Israel's historical destructions and cautioned against repeating them.
The program "Black Kippahs," hosted by Yossi Sergovsky on the Kikar HaShabbat website, serves as a platform for discussing pressing national issues. The debate highlighted deep divisions over the military draft of Haredim and the broader implications for Israel's future.
