Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan Continues Vocal Support for Palestinians at World Cup

Following Egypt's historic campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coach Hossam Hassan maintained his outspoken support for the Palestinian cause during the team's homecoming ceremony in Al-Alamein. At the official event on July 11, Hassan waved the Palestinian flag before thousands of fans, a gesture that echoed his earlier actions during the tournament, including wrapping himself in the flag after Egypt's penalty shootout victory over Australia. In a beIN Sports interview, he dedicated the win to both the Egyptian and Palestinian peoples, expressing solidarity with Gaza residents and honoring Palestinian martyrs.

Despite criticism, Hassan remained steadfast, stating before Egypt's round of 16 match against Argentina that those who do not feel the Palestinians' suffering lack humanity. He also urged the international community, media, and athletes to use the World Cup platform to advocate for Palestinian rights, calling it a basic human necessity. His support resonated widely, inspiring a mural in Gaza depicting Hassan holding both Egyptian and Palestinian flags, created on the rubble of a destroyed home as a tribute.

However, not all reactions were positive. Argentine commentator Eduardo Feinmann criticized Hassan's conduct and statements, calling him a "clown" and challenging his concern for Gaza by pointing to Egypt's closed border with the territory. Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi honored the team with a medal of excellence, praising their discipline and teamwork and expressing confidence in their future. He also endorsed the continued leadership of Hassan and his brother Ibrahim, the team's manager.

During the celebrations, some fans protested against racism by crossing their arms over their faces, referencing Hassan's gesture after the loss to Argentina. The coach had claimed external factors influenced the defeat but emphasized his players brought honor to African and Arab football.
