MK Tali Gottlieb Accuses Israeli Supreme Court of Shielding Corrupt Judges
On Friday, Israeli Member of Knesset Tali Gottlieb sharply criticized the Supreme Court during a radio interview on Galei Yisrael. She described the High Court of Justice (Bagatz) as a "safe haven for corrupt judges," citing the legal immunity judges enjoy from criminal prosecution. Gottlieb accused the court of acting in defiance of the government and engaging in a campaign against it, claiming that judges threaten to "go off the rails" in their opposition.
Gottlieb referenced former Supreme Court Justice Yitzhak Amit, who reportedly stated that he intervenes in legislation and appointments because the current government lacks the ability to make appointments. She characterized this as arrogance and alleged that the court deliberately seeks to discourage right-wing supporters as a tactic for left-wing dominance. Gottlieb asserted that the court's approach aims to weaken and demoralize the right.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between the Israeli government and the judiciary, with accusations that the Supreme Court is overstepping its authority and undermining elected officials. The remarks suggest a deepening rift over judicial immunity and the court's role in political affairs, with Yitzhak Amit specifically targeted in the criticism for his alleged interventions.
