US Government Blocks New York City Meeting With Iranian UN Ambassador
Anna Maria Archilla, New York City's international relations official, planned an official meeting with Iran's UN ambassador, Amir Saeed Iravani. The meeting was abruptly canceled after intervention by U.S. State Department officials, who were not informed of the initiative beforehand. They had to clarify to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani the permissible boundaries for such engagements. Archilla did not notify the mayor about the planned meeting and was reprimanded for her unilateral decision. A spokesperson for the mayor's office stated officially that "this meeting did not take place and will not take place."
