Haredim and Likud Reach Compromise on Basic Law: Torah Study Clause Removed
The Haredi parties and Likud have reached a compromise regarding the Basic Law on Torah Study amid ongoing disputes. The agreement involves removing the second clause of the law, which stated that Torah study would be recognized as a fundamental value in Israel to create a “balance of justice” with other core values. Under the emerging framework, the Basic Law on Torah Study will retain only the first clause, with the final wording still pending approval from leading rabbis.
Simultaneously, a separate law is being drafted to address the needs of combat veterans, aiming to acknowledge their service and contribution to the state. This separate legislation is in the process of formulation and also awaits final rabbinical approval. The dual-track approach is intended to facilitate progress on the Basic Law on Torah Study while providing a distinct solution for concerns raised by opponents of the original text.
