Hitman 7 Compilation Revolutionizes Israeli Pop Music Consumption 30 Years Ago
On July 9, 1996, the seventh installment of the Hitman music compilation series was released, marking a historic moment in Israeli pop culture. Unlike previous compilations, Hitman 7 featured a unique blend of major summer hits including "Tik Tik Tok," "Macarena," and "Coco Jumbo," which collectively reshaped how Israelis consumed pop music. Ran Atzmon, the compilation's editor from Hed Artzi, recalled that work on the album began six months prior, focusing on identifying future hits and balancing chart-toppers with quality tracks like Bette Midler's song, which he considered the best on the album.
The compilation's success was unprecedented, officially selling 200,000 legal copies, with unofficial estimates suggesting counterfeit sales could have reached nearly one million. Shlomi Shaul, a longtime employee at the legendary Diskcenter store in Dizengoff Center, described daily dance parties fueled by the album's popularity. Yoram Vazana, a former Reshet Gimmel DJ and competitor label executive, noted that Hitman 7's dominance scared off rival compilations, comparing its market power to that of political figure Benjamin Netanyahu.
Hitman 7 was part of a series launched in 1992, with the brand becoming synonymous with summer hits starting from the fifth volume. The album featured international stars like Tony Braxton, David Bowie, and Shaggy, many of whom readily agreed to participate due to lucrative royalties. Despite its commercial impact, Atzmon stated that the compilation did not influence Israeli musicians directly, though Vazana argued it introduced Israeli audiences and artists to Latin and other international styles, laying groundwork for later trends like reggaeton.
Following Hitman 7, the eighth volume also achieved massive success with hits like "MMMbop" and "Barbie Girl," but subsequent editions saw declining popularity, with the brand fading out by 2002. The 30th anniversary of Hitman 7 highlights its role as a cultural milestone that transformed Israel's summer music scene and remains fondly remembered by fans today.
