Knesset Approves Memorial Corporation and Museum to Honor Golda Meir
The Knesset Education Committee approved the second and third readings of a bill to establish a memorial corporation dedicated to Golda Meir. The corporation will include a memorial site, museum, archive, and research institute to preserve and showcase Meir's legacy as Israel's only female prime minister. The museum will feature exhibitions on her life, her role in Israel's founding, and her impact on key historical events.
The bill also designates the 8th of Kislev, the anniversary of Meir's death, as "Golda Meir Day," during which commemorative ceremonies and educational activities will be held in schools and IDF camps to honor her memory. The legislation stipulates that a woman will lead the corporation during its first two terms.
Committee chairman MK Tzvi Sukot praised the bill as a correction of a historical injustice, emphasizing Meir's unique status and expressing hope for future female leadership. The bill's sponsors, MKs Merav Michaeli and Penina Tamano-Shata, highlighted that until now, only male prime ministers have been officially commemorated, and this initiative aims to rectify that imbalance.
