Dr. Aryeh Beker Urges Israeli Government to Defy Supreme Court Ruling on Second Authority

In his weekly column on Channel 7, Dr. Aryeh Beker praised the Israeli government's decision to defy the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the Second Authority for Television and Radio. He described the move as "courageous, necessary, and required," encouraging the government to continue exercising its authority without yielding to the court's verdict.

Beker, whose son Ehud was killed in a 1995 terror attack, sharply criticized opposition leaders such as Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett, and President Isaac Herzog for their harsh reactions, which he said predicted the "end of democracy and anarchy." He rejected claims that the government's defiance would encourage citizens to break the law, asserting instead that the court's ruling itself was blatantly illegal and undermined the rule of law.

He also condemned President Herzog for his stance against protest groups, accusing him of hypocrisy and reminding him that these groups had received presidential honors. Beker called on right-wing representatives not to abandon the public discourse to their opponents and cited the government's previous refusal to enforce a Supreme Court order to evacuate the Bedouin outpost Khan al-Ahmar as an example of selective compliance with court rulings.

Beker concluded that only through noncompliance can the government prevent what he termed a destructive judicial overreach that threatens democracy and legal order in Israel.
