Iranian President and Foreign Minister Attacked by Hardliners at Khamenei Funeral

According to a report by The New York Times, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were attacked by hardline opponents of negotiations with the United States during the official funeral events for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The incidents occurred last Monday amid the funeral ceremonies.

President Pezeshkian was assaulted by a crowd of extremists who attempted to knock him to the ground while shouting "Death to the appeaser." Videos circulated on social media, including by the president's official office, showed him staggering and clearly disoriented. His personal security team managed to extract him from the hostile crowd by pushing back the attackers.

On the same day, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, also identified with the more moderate political faction in Iran, was targeted when a stone was thrown at him. He had to flee into an alley to protect himself. Another video showed the attackers waving flags, cursing Araghchi, and openly calling for his assassination.

These attacks highlight the internal tensions within Iran between hardline factions opposed to engagement with the U.S. and more moderate officials advocating for dialogue. The violent confrontations took place during a highly charged national event, underscoring the volatility of Iran's political landscape.
