Elon Musk's SpaceXAI Launches Grok 4.5 AI Model Focused on Coding and Efficiency
SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI and Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, unveiled its new AI model Grok 4.5 on July 8, 2026. This is the first model released since SpaceX's IPO and its acquisition of the startup Cursor. Grok 4.5 is specifically trained for coding and AI agent tasks, developed in collaboration with Cursor, and is designed to deliver cutting-edge intelligence with leading speed and cost efficiency.
The company described Grok 4.5 as a "workhorse" capable of automating typical AI industry tasks such as code writing, app development, office and administrative work, research, and writing. SpaceXAI claims the model offers twice the token efficiency compared to leading competitors, enabling lower operational costs. Elon Musk compared Grok 4.5 to Anthropic's Opus large language model, stating it matches Opus's capabilities but is faster, more token-efficient, and cheaper.
Pricing for Grok 4.5 is set at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, significantly lower than Opus 4.7's $5 and $25 respectively. The model is available through Grok Build, Cursor subscriptions, and SpaceXAI's developer console, though it will only be accessible in the European Union starting mid-July.
In related AI news, OpenAI plans to launch its latest and most powerful model, GPT 5.6, on the same day. Previously restricted by the Trump administration over security concerns, these limitations were reportedly lifted recently, allowing a select group of vetted organizations early access to GPT 5.6.
