Jerusalem Advisor Urges Immediate Repeal of Per-Minute Parking Fee Law

Ofer Iyobi, a senior advisor to the mayor of Jerusalem and social activist, has urgently called on Knesset member Naama Lazimi to repeal or amend the recently enacted law that mandates parking fees be charged by the minute. In a letter prompted by numerous public complaints, Iyobi explained that although the law was originally intended to protect consumers by introducing per-minute billing, it has instead led to steep base rate hikes by many parking lot operators. This has resulted in residents facing exorbitant charges for short visits or errands in the city center, far exceeding previous parking costs.

Iyobi emphasized that while the law's original intent was commendable, its practical effects have backfired, imposing a significant financial burden on the public amid Israel's rising cost of living. He described the parking fees as a daily financial trap for Jerusalem residents and called for immediate legislative action to halt price increases and genuinely protect consumers. Iyobi's appeal highlights growing public frustration and the economic impact of the current parking fee structure.
