Hapoel Tel Aviv Owner Demands Regulatory Probe into Channel 5 Sports Coverage Bias

One day after the Recanati family announced their increased stake in Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball, Hapoel Tel Aviv owner Ofer Yanai formally requested a regulatory investigation into Channel 5 Sports. Yanai, through lawyers Liran Bar Shalom and Adi Kopel Aviv from Meitar Law Offices, addressed the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Council on Wednesday, alleging a structural conflict of interest due to the channel's ownership ties to the team it covers.

The complaint highlights that the Recanati family's move to raise their Maccabi Tel Aviv stake to 58% intensifies concerns over cross-ownership between the main sports broadcaster in Israel and the sports entity it reports on. Yanai's legal team argues this creates a direct economic link between the channel's controlling owners and its broadcast content, resulting in a clear conflict of interest.

Furthermore, the letter criticizes Channel 5 Sports for failing to provide viewers with adequate disclosure about these ownership connections, which Yanai claims undermines transparency, fairness, and public trust. He demands the council mandate a binding disclosure mechanism for all broadcasts related to Maccabi Tel Aviv and its competitors, implement separation between the channel's business and editorial divisions, and consider enforcement actions if legal or licensing rules are violated.

The lawyers emphasize that the complaint is not about isolated editorial decisions but about a persistent structural flaw affecting broadcast credibility and fairness. They note that earlier attempts in May to address the issue with Channel 5 Sports and the YES satellite provider received no substantive response, prompting this formal regulatory complaint for urgent intervention.
