LGBTQ+ Activists Criticize Arab Candidate's Refusal to Display Pride Flag in Israeli Democrats Party

Activists within the Israeli Democrats party have expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of action against an Arab candidate for the Knesset list who has refused to publicly show support for the LGBTQ+ community by not posing with the Pride flag. This has sparked criticism among LGBTQ+ members of the party regarding its commitment to advancing policies that include the Arab sector. Omar Nahmani, former spokesman for Yair Golan, reported receiving numerous concerns from LGBTQ+ individuals worried that a leading and viable candidate in the Democrats has declined for a week to be photographed with the Pride flag. Nahmani stated on Facebook that if the candidate were a religious Jewish woman instead of a Muslim, she would have been expelled from the party. He emphasized his refusal to compromise on human and civil rights for both himself and the Arab community, calling the Democrats his home where no form of homophobia, explicit or implied, will be tolerated.

To illustrate his stance, Nahmani shared a digitally altered image of Somaya Bashir, a Muslim activist running on the Democrats' list, wearing a hijab in Pride colors. Meanwhile, in honor of Pride Month, party leader Yair Golan released several Hebrew-language videos celebrating the party's support for LGBTQ+ rights and community backing. However, these videos were notably absent from the Democrats' Arabic-language Facebook channel, highlighting a possible disconnect in messaging between Hebrew and Arabic audiences within the party.
